You can only ask the person calling through relay where their from or what business. I'm ashamed to admit that I almost got involved with one of these scammers.We started talking on a christian love site.He checked out my profile and then sent me a letter that was 2 pages long.I let it lay for a few days and then he sent me another one. I seen his profile one time. He was very nice looking.He then wanted us to talk through Im. I never had that before.So he set it up for me through Yahoo.We talked for a few more days and then we exchanged phone numbers.I don't know what i was thinking.I've never done that.I was so caught up with all his lies.Then I found out about the Nigarian scams going on. He had a nigarian mobil. I knew right then I was being scammed. I played along with him for a little while. Then bingo he started asking me for money.He said he had a 8 year old son that was rushed to the hospital and he couldn't get ahold of any money for him to be operated on.He even went as far as asking me to send him a credit card or give him my bank account #.That was when I unloaded on him.When I told him he was a scammer he got angry.I have pretty good sense. But I regret giving him my home phone number. I also had to have my password changed with this site I'm on. I have definately learned a lesson from this. Guest Re :   FCC and IP registration   personally i could care less if the center closes or not  like i said im only here for the check.      and secondly  our seniority  goes with us        we have had people transfer in  to our office, from non relay offices    and they've kept their seniority!!      like i said      you probably work in the same office i do,    but the scammers will figure out a way to get around whatever it is the fcc plans on doing, i hope they dont    but    it will be a matter of time  and theyll be back.    I HATE MY JOB!!!    ya  we'll miss the money,  but  life will go on,  we'll get our severence pay  our pension buy out  and money from our union alliance to go to school  plus unemployment,    so  i guess you'll tell me  that thats all a lie too!!    we'll walk away with nothing!! 07/30/2008 6:57 PM

Guest Topic :   Waste of time We have gotten about 15 operator relay calls in the past year looking for printing. It's a pain in the ass. Yesterday, after the 2nd one in 2 hours, and wasting 15 minutes of my time, I asked the relay operator what company she worked for. She gave me some name of a company that when Googled, showed nothing and she would not let me talk to her supervisor. Ugh.  07/30/2008 12:28 PM

What????  DO NOT believe the "managers".  They are going  to tell you whatever you want to hear because they do NOT want everyone filing for disability due to stress etc before they have to close down the center.   As far as the contract goes you have to have the JOB EQUIVALENCY to transfer to another at&t job site and the EDUCATION to another job within at&t.  On top of that there are NO jobs within a 4 state area that have that EQUIVALANCY so that means you have to move into a higher standard of living area (and New Castle is the LOWEST standard of living) starting at the BOTTOM of the union 's  seniority which means that  even if you do get a job in  Michigan  for example  you will be working the worst shifts there are since you will be at the bottom of the seniority!!  Take a hard look at your contract and question your so called "union reps" and they will have no option but to tell you the hard truth!  The bottom line is that the managers, the CA's, the Government has been "scamming" the  American tax payer for years and now the Federal Government has stepped in and said it is time to stop since the corruption has gotten so bad.  Now it's time to accept the truth and move on as best you can!!  Remember this, at&t has laid off  tens of thousands and they DO NOT give a damn about you.  The "union" does not give a damn either!  They have been in the pocket of at&t since the beginning!  I wish all of you the best of luck but in this economy and recession it is going to be tough! 07/29/2008 9:49 PM

Guest Re :   FCC and IP registration   at&t relay in New Castle PA is finished.  90 percent of their call volume is fraudulant and illegal calls.  Once registration and valid ten digit originating numbers are required the call volume will dry up.  In the end, once layoffs are announced the CAs and management will have to come to realization that denial of the truth (that the center is no more than a hub for illegal\immoral activity) is no longer a valid option.  Of course, they won't care because they were "just doing their job", which of course was aiding and abetting in ripping off their own fellow Americans and the taxpayers that paid them!  Justice is sometimes served cold and its going to be a cold winter in New Castle PA. 07/25/2008 7:46 AM

I found this site tonite because there was a thread started by a member at thescambaiter.com who'd got a "puppy scammer" relay call, and had never heard of this method to scam. I did not send money but the hurt of knowing --immediately knowing when he asked for it was heartbreaking. We had talked on the phone sent emails --he sent me flowers---we had our kids involved or my kids and whoever were posing as his kids etc...--for several months with no talk of any money stuff. Then one week he said I sent you a check because I want to take care of you and the kids and my daughter and I will be coming to live with you in Florida. RED FLAG OF COURSE I said I cannot accept a check and will send it right back to you---about a week later (still no check) he got in a car accident and of course needed some money and asked me for it. I said no--he got mad. I sent him an email saying he is a scammer and he proceeds to call me very unfortunate names and use personal things we spoke about in our months of dating against me. So the money --I didn't lose. The incident really stung. So for those of you think it would be so easy to spot---it isn't. I am not stupid nor am I ugly or poor. I never sent anything to him financially but still am hurt because he turned out to be a scammer. He spent a lot of time with me on the phone and Im. He was very good. speedial 1 Re :   Some relay stuff I think deaf users should know...  You bring up a good point. There is confusion among the users of VCO as I know of people who don't know how to use it properly and because VCO is not a part of Deaf culture there really isn't a good way of learnig, except via "word of mouth" or HLAA, to which only a minority of hoh/late deafened belong. When using VCO is initiated the instructions to us are "Type or voice" your number. We do that. What most users don't know, and I found out on site a while ago, is at that point we are not connected to you CA's. Apparently, we are not connected until we receive your identification information, which means we have to repeat either by voice or TTY our information a second time. I don't know if this has changed as I haven't used my VCO/phone in a while. This is confusing for the user who comes to think they can either type or voice. To address your point regarding voice volume...many severely hoh or those awaiting implants and some after can't hear their voice properly and therefore can't adjust the volume well, especially over the phone. In addition to too loud volume often their voices are too high pitched and have a strident quality. It's difficult to learn to modulate ones voice when asked to do so, even when not on the phone but not being able to see the person with whom you are communicating "wince", there often isn't a good way to modulate because there's no feedback. 06/29/2008 10:59 AM

Guest Re :   Some relay stuff I think deaf users should know...   If you are a vco user please, please, at the end of your call (when the person you called is STILL on the line because we have to say our ending phrase ..THIS IS CAXXXX BYE SKSK) do NOT TYPE anything. When vco is on, your typing sounds like a bunch of ear-shattering noises called "baudot tones". This also happens when you receive garble and type to the opr "garble pls repeat")..just voice your problems. Because not only is the opr getting the offending noises..so is the person you're speaking to. If you keep this up all relay operators and your friends will be deaf, too. Just WAIT please for the person you called to hang up and when you see (HUNG UP ANOTHER CALL QQ) GA then VOICE  that you wish to end the call..do not TYPE. ouch! And I have to say it, after many years of seeing the infamous "DAIL"..I know it is not a typo. The word is spelled dIAl. Okay? I before A. It is most often used by scammers but there are deaf people who do it as well.  Ex: "Pls dail nbr is 555-555-5555." ga I've also had a call where a person's name is constantly spelled wrong. Ex: "opr ask for Marica." People have weird names nowadays..so as an opr I have to say "Ma-ree-ka, etc." Until someone notifies me that this name is actually Marcia. Pls spell people's names correctly so the opr can then pronounce it correctly and not get hung up on. I've seen it many times, when an opr does everything correctly, a few people (perhaps mentally handicapped? not sure) will insist that their family member does not have an answering machine...when clearly there is one. Ex: RING 1    2      3    4    5  (ANS MACH) (M) ..xxxxxxxxxx (BEEP ANS MACH HUNG UP) (LEAVE MSG QQ) GA the tty user then turns around and says something about their relative not having an ans mach. Well, apparently they do...so don't yell at the opr. And if you do get mad, yelling is much better than putting curses on the opr such as "hocus pocus eat of death"...come on, are we really acting like a 2-year-old? You're a grown adult. Please refrain from abuse at all costs. We don't get paid near as much as we should and we're trying to help. another tip for vco users...pls speak in a regular low indoor voice...most vco users scream b/c they think they will not be heard. Not true. I've often pondered why their family members don't tell them they are hurting our ears by screaming their conversations like they are at a ball game. I've actually had to take my headset off from ear pain. One thing relay does not offer in it's benefits is services for relay operators who have gone deaf from working for relay. It's ground for a law suit, if you ask me (towards the relay company, that is). So pls, be kind, be quieter. 06/24/2008 12:24 PM
