After recieving a TTY call from a customer, we were asked for an e-mail address. The person answering the call was not familiar with TTY and gave the e-mail address of our boss. We recieved another call soon after asking us if we got the first order. We asked for their e-mail address with questions and got this response:BRnames have been changed)HOW RE U DOING MIKE THIS IS ________I WANT TO ORDER PICTURE FRAME WITHTHE EYE SIZE OF 50,THE BREATH WIDTH OF18 AND THE TEMPLE LENGTH OF 140 I WANT TO450 PIECES TO MY ORPHANAGE HOUSE .SO MAY II KNOW THE TOTAL AMOUNT PLUS TAX WITH DELIEVERYAND MY SHIPPING COMPANY WILL COME FOR THE PICK UP WHEN PAYMENT IS MADETHANKS A LOT HOPE TO HEAR FROM YOU SOONI work in picture framing, and this person was asking for eyeglasses (which I realized after talking to other framers in our forum, and was told that this was probably a TTY scam.) This just happened yesterday and I have already contacted the scammer and let him know we were onto him.To add to this- Had the person called on TTY and actually ordered framing to be sent somewhere with a credit card, this may have been a different conversation. The person who originally answered the call would probably have placed the order, because we ship all over the country. We usually only ship to people who have an account with us, but in the case of the TTY, it might have been assumed that the person couldn't come to us.

Big thing to remember, they are NOT calling from an actual TTY, they're calling from the INTERNET IP-relay which is accessible through AIM, YAHOO, and MSN messengers. ANYONE including scammers can access this service (unfortunately!)

Yes, it's a scam.

Edit: I forgot to mention, the way you can tell the difference between IP-RELAY and STATE RELAY is how the operator announces the call. If you hear "This is IP-RELAY" then it's coming from the internet, where anyone DEAF or NOT DEAF could access it.

IF you hear the operator say "This is [STATE]-RELAY" then it's from an ACTUAL TTY or TDD... it's LEGIT.

If you are confused, feel free to ask the operator they can tell you if it is STATE or IP relay.

I realized it was a scam after posting about it and doing some research. I just wanted to post about our experience. Luckily, the guy placing the order didn't know anything about framing (picture frames) and was still trying to order eyeglasses from us. At first we were just confused because we didn't understand the way he was wording the measurements. There's a very slight possibility that someone might have filled an order if it were in-country for shipped frames, but it wouldn't ever get as far as many scams go. Luckily we check Credit cards from out of state and only do large shipments to customers who already have established an account with us (and a credit check)

Edited to add- I am truly glad that you folks are doing what you can to curb this. While I'm all for privacy rights, when the warning flags go up, people should be warned. If this had only been an email, it wouldn't have even gotten a reply. Since it was a TTY/relay call, we really assumed a deaf person was calling us and was probably confused. (At first)

I should mention that the person's name in the email was "white guy" and it was a long name with numbers at a yahoo address. He had also obviously cut and pasted both emails addressed to the same person.

I know a bit about background scams but that was the first I'd heard of a relay one.
