Re :   Some relay stuff I think deaf users should know...

You bring up a good point. There is confusion among the users of VCO as I know of people who don't know how to use it properly and because VCO is not a part of Deaf culture there really isn't a good way of learnig, except via "word of mouth" or HLAA, to which only a minority of hoh/late deafened belong.

When using VCO is initiated the instructions to us are "Type or voice" your number. We do that. What most users don't know, and I found out on site a while ago, is at that point we are not connected to you CA's. Apparently, we are not connected until we receive your identification information, which means we have to repeat either by voice or TTY our information a second time. I don't know if this has changed as I haven't used my VCO/phone in a while. This is confusing for the user who comes to think they can either type or voice.

To address your point regarding voice volume...many severely hoh or those awaiting implants and some after can't hear their voice properly and therefore can't adjust the volume well, especially over the phone. In addition to too loud volume often their voices are too high pitched and have a strident quality. It's difficult to learn to modulate ones voice when asked to do so, even when not on the phone but not being able to see the person with whom you are communicating "wince", there often isn't a good way to modulate because there's no feedback.

Re :   Some relay stuff I think deaf users should know...

If you are a vco user please, please, at the end of your call (when the person you called is STILL on the line because we have to say our ending phrase ..THIS IS CAXXXX BYE SKSK) do NOT TYPE anything. When vco is on, your typing sounds like a bunch of ear-shattering noises called "baudot tones". This also happens when you receive garble and type to the opr "garble pls repeat")..just voice your problems. Because not only is the opr getting the offending noises..so is the person you're speaking to. If you keep this up all relay operators and your friends will be deaf, too. Just WAIT please for the person you called to hang up and when you see (HUNG UP ANOTHER CALL QQ) GA then VOICE  that you wish to end the call..do not TYPE. ouch!

And I have to say it, after many years of seeing the infamous "DAIL"..I know it is not a typo. The word is spelled dIAl. Okay? I before A. It is most often used by scammers but there are deaf people who do it as well.  Ex: "Pls dail nbr is 555-555-5555." ga

I've also had a call where a person's name is constantly spelled wrong. Ex: "opr ask for Marica."
People have weird names nowadays..so as an opr I have to say "Ma-ree-ka, etc." Until someone notifies me that this name is actually Marcia. Pls spell people's names correctly so the opr can then pronounce it correctly and not get hung up on.

I've seen it many times, when an opr does everything correctly, a few people (perhaps mentally handicapped? not sure) will insist that their family member does not have an answering machine...when clearly there is one. Ex:

RING 1    2      3    4    5
(ANS MACH) (M) ..xxxxxxxxxx (BEEP ANS MACH HUNG UP) (LEAVE MSG QQ) GA
the tty user then turns around and says something about their relative not having an ans mach. Well, apparently they do...so don't yell at the opr. And if you do get mad, yelling is much better than putting curses on the opr such as "hocus pocus eat of death"...come on, are we really acting like a 2-year-old? You're a grown adult. Please refrain from abuse at all costs. We don't get paid near as much as we should and we're trying to help.

another tip for vco users...pls speak in a regular low indoor voice...most vco users scream b/c they think they will not be heard. Not true. I've often pondered why their family members don't tell them they are hurting our ears by screaming their conversations like they are at a ball game. I've actually had to take my headset off from ear pain. One thing relay does not offer in it's benefits is services for relay operators who have gone deaf from working for relay. It's ground for a law suit, if you ask me (towards the relay company, that is). So pls, be kind, be quieter.

Re :   How to stop prank calls?

Hi,
I saw a classiffied few days ago about prank calls - how to stop them. I didn't read it because I do not have the problems with prank calls - but maybe you will find out something interesting there. There is a link
http://www.usfreeads.com/1291444-cls.html

Besides to learn more about it - you know rules, tips and what is legal what is not you will find it out with Search engines - just put the right question there and you will get your answers.

Best of Luck

Re :   Fraud officially blocked...and now massive layoffs

I actually bailed out before I got my letter, and I am so glad I did. I've never been happier not having to deal with the assholes in relay.

While it is sad that so many jobs were sent out of the U.S. but let's face it, a job that shitty deserves to be handled by the dregs of the world and that's exactly what they got when they sent it down to the Phillipeans.

Re :   phillipin oprs

I hope it destroys Nordia ... I love that the Phillipean operators are pissing people off. Nordia wanted to save a few $$ by moving out of the country, and I hope it costs them far more.

Re :   A Warning

Let me draw some light on your perception of these 3 gentlemen. These guys a re actually the IP address maintainers of the IP Block in question. They are the maintainers of most of the IP blocks in Ghana  and not direct users. You can do a whois at AFRINIC (www.afrinic.net) to crosscheck their status. Your notion of these guys is actually wrong but they rather implement Firewalls and access lists in their network to minimise the people who spam using their IP block and to protect people like you.

What I will entreat all of us to be extra vigilant when doing business online since the fraudsters are always a step ahead of us.

Wow! It's nice to see that Stellar Nordia management is sending their goons to post on here to defend the outsourcing of jobs to the Phillipines and to further insult American relay operators.

Re :   phillipin oprs

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. WTF is a "Lelay Operlator" anyway?

For those that will argue that this is a "business decision" on the part of Stellar Nordia should NOTE that Relay or "Lelay" is funded by U.S. TAX PAYER DOLLARS therefore if the NON-U.S. Company, Stellar Nordia is saving money by taking jobs out of the country, the U.S. taxpayers should receive some sort of rebate as well.

Re :   How I handle scammers

The Hamilton Relay company has no disconnect procedures for fraudulent calls, it really depends on who is operating as the "command center" for the day as to if you get to disconnect them after a certain number of calls (typically 10 although that could be 10 four hour long calls) or not. I've noticed that most Nigerian scammers are extremely impatient, and usually taking your good ol' time they'll get pissed and hang up. Basically they don't have any disconnect procedures, as do most of the large relay services, for internet relay calls simply because they get paid by the minute. That in turn means that as long as you're relaying a call, cash is flowing in which basically means that these companies actually like fraud and prank calls. So let's hear one for the bigwigs of Hamilton and all the other relay companies, thank you for making the underpaid life of an operator one more day of living hell.

Re :   Relay Company information

Being a former employee and supervisor of the Hamilton Relay company based in Nebraska I'll attempt to shed some light into this topic and offer my insight into a few simple ways you can help to hopefully avoid fraudulent charges.

Your "bread and butter" agreement upon hiring when you're a typical operator is basically to not disclose or discuss any calls and definately no call specifics. You, as the operator, are there to funcaiton "as the phone line." Basically what that means is you relay the call with absolutely no bias, all you are there to do is type and talk.

As far as "is information saved or monitored," Yes, some calls are monitored (though no information is stored or to be discussed after the call has ended) but not for fraud, mostly to tighten the reins on the operators and insure they are doing their job. And even at that that only happens to each operator at most 3 or maybe even 4 times a month. It's almost disgusting when you're set to take IP calls you take almost 2 out of 10 "real" calls and the other 8 are either pranks or more likely fraud calls to Lagos, Nigeria. The policy as it were for my former employer was that we were to take 10 outgoing connected calls (to a live person i.e. no calls that end in an answering machine or automated menu being reached) and then write down the screen name and report it back to corporate headquarters and inform the user we were no longer capable of processing the call. Which almost always lead to them "hanging up" and instantly redialing and in most cases getting the same operator.

Sadly, the FCC policies basically say that there is nothing they can do. You are just supposed to be there to relay a call in an unbiased manner and to do other than that would be like instantly wire tapping/ bugging the phones of thousands and thousands of deaf or otherwise impaired people. I deeply deeply wish that there would be something they can do, and there is. The owners of the businesses that are being scammed need to educate themselves.

1. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

2. If it's a large transaction have them meet you in person and write down as much information as you can. If they are too reluctant to talk to you in person then that's a real sign it's probably a scam.

3. Definately be wary of any transactions taking place to funeral homes or other businesses located (or i guess i should say "fictionally located" ) in Lagos, Nigeria or for that matter any foreign country.

4. If you're receiving a call from an internet relay service and you think it may not be a scam, have the person call you back through the non internet relay service (this may not cut down on all scams though it will require the scammer having to actually own a TTY machine).

5. If something seems fishy. Just tell them that you know it's a scam, and then hang up. Hey you might be losing some business, but if they're scamming you you'd still be losing some money. On the bright side, atleast they'll never call you back.

In closing I hope that the information I've included in this short series of paragrahs will greatly help you and your business to avoid being the butt of someone else's joke. And remember, you can always hang up.

Re :   Learn to spell things!

well in memphis ALL of our DC calls had to be translated (worst shit ever/ASL SUCKS learn english?)

Deafie...so you give 20,00  daper to me?????????????????????????

Me... :WTF DOES THAT MEAN?: /fuck it reads verbatim

Lady...Ok, I'll give you 20 dollars for some diapers.

That was wayyyy out there....

anyway, off the subject but i've had/sat next to an opr who had  QUITE a few hilarious nigerians.

"i have kidnap ur wife if u dont give me 20,000 dollar i will kill her"
"uhhh..............    is this a joke?"
"NO THIS IS NOT A JOKE I AM NOT JOKING BECAUSE I NEVER JOKE!!!"

can't forget this one...

"YOU WILL SEND THE MONEY OR ELSE I WILL BEAT YOU TIL YOU CRY LIKE BABY THEN GIVE YOU MILK TO SUCK ON TO STOP CRY"

orrrr...

"I want to suck your penis until the head turns red and ur mum cries for me to stop"

Yeaaaah, that was hottttt.

"Thank you for calling Wendy's this is Josh how can I help you?"
"HELLO THIS RICK JAMES DO YOU HAVE PUPPY FOR SLAE?"
(of course i took  pride in pronouncing SLAE as SLAY  because we all know that's what they really mean :) )
"Uhh puppies for slay????"
/click

"OPR REDAIL"
what? i hit baudot on accident cant see ya!!!!!!

aw shucks, I kinda miss that shit now. I had some pretty amusing days.

It was even more amusing on slow days when i figured out how to transfer calls.

That was pretty B-A for sure.

Anyway... another one this deaf girl was being pretty rude.... she wanted me to call some employer that wouldn't hire her because she was "deafie"

"You not hire me because I deafie u think deafie cant  communiCAT but i communiCAT well"

yeah, i'm pretty sure that made him wanna hire ya babe. I'd have helped you out but since you were so rude that pretty much ruined it for you!

Anyway, I don't think there's any reason EVER to be rude to the opr because they can fuck your shit up asap.

"Pepnoids??? what are pepnoids???"
"PEPNOS!! OPR TELL HER PEPNOS!!"
"Pepnos?? do you mean peppers?"
"NO!!!!!!!! PEPROLLI"

Mk how many times are you gonna guess a word?

I never minded overlooking typos til they got rude, after that it's all verbatim bby.

"OPR ARE U NOT READING WHAT I TYPE? STOP DICKING AROUND THIS IS SERIOUS"

Fuck u dude ALTZ. Cause I don't care if it's serious if you're gonna be a rude motherfucker. I'm sorry your stupid sidekick2  has shitty reception and everything sends at once... not my prob! I voice it when I see it, calm down.

And no I didn't get fired (I made it 2 years!)! I rolled out of that piece in style though (unfortunately ONLY 3 days prior to eliminating fraud and announcing the lay offs... FUCK!!! *slaps head*)! I was a pretty good lil CA til dumbasses pissed me off though so no worries.

& kids that abuse relay.... You should probably get a hobby... maybe like skateboarding or swimming..? not sitting on your obese ass making the opr talk dirty to you. We're well aware that you're unable to get a gf and most of us feel bad for you .... but seriously? Like I'd ever have phone sex for 10 dollars an hour aha, don't be silly.

& to the "adults" that abuse relay "because they pay for it and it amuses them outside of drinking"...... You should probably just drop dead right now, Sorry your life is so dull and meaningless that you need to use relay for entertainment.  Maybe you should try actually making friends? Maybe get a  girlfriend or a hobby? Read a book? Fuck, anything besides being a complete douche bag.

Re :   Fraud officially blocked...and now massive layoffs

All I gotta say is

FUCK RELAY!

I hated that damn job from day one. Nigerians can rot. Deaf people should stop being so whiney and thinking everyone owes them. Yeah, the economy sucks & canadians suck worse.... they hate Americans so this is obviously not that surprising!

What's worse...

Relaying 8-10 hours of scam calls for 10 bucks an hour

or...

Stocking Shelves at Kroger for 6.75 maybe you'd like to flip burgers at BK for 5.90?

Take your pick! I could give  a shit less about those retards who fell for scams. Don't be so stupid, thanks!

I mean it is kind of sad that people are that desperate..... but who can resist such poetry and sweet talking?

"I love you more than I love food"

aha.
