i have a friend who is being harassed over ip relay by someone. this person used ip relay to call a crisis hotline and went on about how he was od'd and may have killed his grandma and would shoot cops if she sent any.needless to say, my friend was put to the ground by cops with guns drawn.the next night the same thing happened except said he was dousing his house in gasoline. not as bad but cops showed up.my question is, are police able to track this person down through the hotline and ip relay?

Oh man I wish you and your friend the best of luck with this, personally I don't know if it can be tracked or not.

Ip addresses can be gotten, but it will take a court order to do so.  It's hard to do but if the legal system in your area will push for it, things can be done about it.


 


Relay calls can't  be blocked to businesses or homes (I don't know WHY they changed it for home numbers!), but I'd see if you can get the server numbers (all calls go through servers which is the phone numbers that show up on someone's caller ID), and have your phone company block them.

Ahhh when did they change that?! They're still telling me that if the person calls customer service they'll be able to block calls from IP relay. I wonder if you could just do it yourself--after someone calls you through relay, do a *60 and it will block that server number from calling you? Of course that won't work for all phones, and you still have the other server numbers to worry about, so yeah.



To the OP: it sounds like your friend isn't actually receiving the calls from IP Relay, but the person is using the service to place calls to other places to harass him? Let me know if that's right. It sounds to me like the cops ought to be pretty eager themselves to find out who's doing it, since they're coming out there for no reason because of it!

my 13 year old daughters life was threatened in detail through this ip relay, where an actual human operated delivered the message. The polise where called and did try to contact the company. they do not keep any recording or transcript of the actual message and will rely even the most disgusting language,threats of death, rape or anything else. I find this disgusting that there are no lines drawn by this company on what may be said. Its the new way of stalking people. This is a very sick worldf. Now my child lives in fear over this and the not knowing who is watching her and waiting to kill her as the message says.

 just to update you guys, these are the new types of scam calls the nigerians are using:
 
1.
using your social security number to access a persons account. they ll
call let s say bank of america, give their ssn and ask for the account
balance. then they ll ask for the last transaction posted on the
account, once they have that, they ll disconnect then call bank of
america again give their ssn ask for the balance, then ask the agent to
reset their online user name. the agent will now ask verification
questions (such as when was your last transaction) and then when they
re verified, they ll ask the agent to reset the user name and password,
tell the agent to change the billing address and just basically change
the whole profile of the person they re ripping off, so the real owner
of the account will not be able to access his account anymore.

2.
calling newspapers and asking to be directed to the classified
department. once they reach the classified department they ll ask to
place a pet ad saying that they are putting a puppy up for adoption.
then they ll have the ad run for 2 weeks on print and online paying the
cost by using a credit card they just ripped off. sometimes they run up
to 3 cards before the card goes through. i m not exactly sure how this
scam works from the end of the person who inquires about the puppu but
we get calls like this everyday all day with ip addresses from nigeria
so im pretty sure it s a scam. and oh by the way before they put their
ad, they would have us call dozens of people who are really putting
their pets up for adoption and their information so they would have
something to use, even pictures of the real pet.

3. scammers
using ip relay to call electronic shops and ordering motorola 2 way
radios. scammers calling auto parts shops asking for Cummings or
caterpillar engine parts. basically they order 200 pieces of whatever
what they want and do business through email communication. and they
have the audacity to say that they re deaf reverends and need help with
their churches whatnot.

4. buying cars, i have to take my hat
of to scammers who do this type of fraud. they are so good they can get
away with buying a car and shipping it to nigeria.

AND YOU
KNOW WHAT THE SAD AND FRUSTRATING THING IS THAT AS AN OPERATOR WE HAVE
NO GUIDELINES REGARDING THESE TYPES OF FRAUD CALLS. WE HAVE GUIDELINES
FOR OTHER TYPES OF SCAMS (BUT I WONT SAY IT HERE BECAUSE THE NIGERIANS
HAVE THEIR EYES EVERYWHERE AND MIGHT GET SMART) SO BASICALLY OPERATORS
ARE POWERLESS TO STOP THESE FRAUD CALLS FROM HAPPENING AND THEY CALL SO
OFTEN. OUR LINES QUE BECAUSE OF THEM. 60% OF OUR CALLS ARE FROM THESE
SCAMMERS. I FEEL SO BAD AND FRUSTRATED EVERYTIMES I RECEIVE A SCAM
CALL. I LOVE MY JOB. I FEEL VERY FULFILLED WHEN I GET CALLS FROM REAL
HEARING IMPARED PEOPLE WHEN I LEND MY VOICE AND MY HEARING TO THEM SO
THEY COULD LIVE A NORMAL LIFE LIKE THE REST OF US.
