That's the case at the Memphis center.  How about everywhere else?  As of the Feb 7th, Nordia pressed their magic button and blocked out fraud calls.  I've only seen 2 or 3 make it through myself since then.  Call volume has dropped drastically, and this week they announced that out of the about 200 employees at the center, they're only gonna keep about 60 or so of them.  We're supposed to be notified by letter if we're being let go, and then we have 60 more days to work followed by 6 weeks of severance pay.  These are the details I've gathered from my supervisor from employees who have gone to the meetings about this.  Unfortunately my meeting time yesterday was cancelled, and I was never given a chance to go to another one...isn't that fantastic?

Either way, I'm pretty sure I'll have to find a new job because even if I'm one that they keep, I'm sure they'll change all the schedules.  Chances are the schedule they give me will interfere with school.  So oh well.

I'm not upset with Nordia though.  They did the right thing by blocking fraud out.  This is just one of the consequences of it.  Verizon should have done this, but apparently all they were concerned about was making money.

Well, good luck to everyone!  Let me know what's going on at your center because I don't know if we're the first or if this is company-wide.

What upsets me is that you're losing your jobs because verizon was too busy sitting on its hands and raking in the cash from taxpayers and the FCC than stopping the damned Nigerians.

Now Verizon's been acquired by a company with morals and that makes a stand to defend the American citizens against fraud. The only reason these layoffs have to happen is because Verizon was too greedy and amoral so they offered jobs that they NEVER should have offered in the first place.

So now, less jobs, less frauds, and less money spents from the taxpayers' pockets. I wonder what the advantages will be in the long run...

While I am glad to see that something is being done about the scams, so that fewer people will become victims, it is sad that it has to come at the cost of your jobs.

RE:Fraud officially blocked...and now massive layoffs

Hi,

I worked in the Madison center and they shut us down WAY early. We were told last year July that we would be shutting down. They all gave us false hopes that we would still be opened until sept of 08' We got the annoucement we're shutting down Jan 17th or something like that. They told us we would still be working until March 21st we got laid off (with pay until March 21st and Severance for 4 weeks (I've only worked there less than a year)

It really makes me upset how they could just let us go like that. they said we would be working until march 21st. I mean it's nice to be off for that long and all the money I will be getting. But it's ridicilous. The last few days we worked there THERE WAS NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO fraud. I mean there was but it wasn't threw instant ip (when you just type in the the number on ip-relay.com) but there was fraud threw wireless ip (when you call from your phone) Which was kind of odd. but no one seemed to care so.

It's nice there won't be as much fraud. Go America is the one's that bought us out. There a good company and I hope they do good for the deaf hard of hearing or speech disaibled.

As much as I loved my job ( even the bad sides because people are seriously dumb. . . whoever would get a fraud call and believe it (even after told they had to send it over seas) that's there own fault. I had to do my job, and well It's very sad, I admit I've had someguilty feelings and I really wanted to call and tell them. Esppecially LOVE fraud that's REALLY REALLY sad. But I never did, and well people will figure out for themselves.

The only annoying thing about this entire situation, is that it's very evident that Verizon had the ability to "block" these calls. Come on, they don't really expect us to believe that Norida has this crazy "technology" to block out fraud, that they were able to implement into our systems just like that. That comes with all kinds of coding, programming and designing before they are able to do this type of stuff. Verizon always could have done this, because they've done this before. They just didn't. Norida isn't doing anything new, they're just doing what should've been done a long time ago.

Enjoy it while it lasts!!!!!

Blocking frauds? Possible, but the more likely reason for all of this  is that a lot of relay operator jobs are moving to the Phillipines. In the past 6 months, my employer (Nordia) has set up shop in Manilla and now has as many employees over there as they do here. I am told they get paid in one day what we get paid by the hour...

the only reason they are keeping Riverbank and Memphis open is because of the state contracts. They have to stay in the States. But when it's all said and done I don't care what anybody says I'm sure once the contracts are up  they won't hesitate  to  close down riverbank and memphis all together then the Deafies will really be pissed. I can't count how many calls i get a day saying it took them forever to actually get someone that didn't have an accent. They don't like it. They wonder why the economy is so bad in the states they fucking indians taking our jobs because they work for penny's. And what kills me is that we have to go to school and college to get a decent job for what they do. And they do jack shit!

the larger issues here are greed, job loss, and outsourcing...

Q: how would a company make outsourcing, and the resultant domestic job loss, palatable?
A: by cleverly spinning the reasons behind the "need" to outsource.. i.e, a fraud call filter....

no company ever *needs* to outsource, unless it's after record profits via exploiting the labor pool in countries where people get arrested and/or shot for unionizing. *please* remember that other exploited workers elsewhere ain't "taking" your jobs... the big bizness boss is responsible, and no one else.

i can't help but think this whole verizon / fraud filter "whoops! call volume drop = job loss & outsourcing" is a PR coup. and a good one.

It seems like this is only helping certain other relay companies, like Hamilton, which has the lion's share of state traditional relay contracts.  I'm sure Hamilton is sucking up the FCC dividends for more relay contracts.  As more deaf people go towards video relay service, text based relay is going the way of scammers. So it's ok for IP Relay to go to foreign countries because most Americans dislike hearing a foreign voice trying to contact them for anything. IP Relay will appear less legitimate.
