So I got home last night from work after much frustration from this damn attendance policy and the Stellar Nordia switch and was wondering how the hell do we operators have a voice in such a large company to get things changed (ex. not getting written up for using paid sick days that are given to us!). Apparently in Nov and Dec of 2007 I began to develop a pattern of abusing the attendance policy by actually using sick time alloted to me which is my right to use. I got two "contacts", one for not meeting my goal and one for having a pattern. How can i be told I am following a pattern of abusing the attendance policy (that I barely understand myself) when i dont even know I'm abusing it?? I understand that we have to have a certain amount of oprs on the phones etc., fines fines etc., but why is taking a sick day so hard? SO I thought about all of this and the writer's strike made me think of Unionization... I brought it up at work today, "is there an opr union? how do we oprs get these frustrations address? how will i be protected from scruitiny?" and my sup (also frustrated) told me that it is a really touchy subject, something about Tennessee being a non union state, and that the "big wigs" go as far as bringing someone in to talk ppl out of unionization, it's expensive and sometimes not as worth it as u would think... IS THIS RIGHT? IS THERE SOMETHING IM NOT GETTING HERE? I just think it's strange some of these things... how a company can get away with writing you up for being sick? Being punished for being sick because you used a day they give you.... Why cant we unionize and is it really bad that I'm talking about this at work? I kind of felt like if i spoke too loudly someone would write me up or shut me up.... Can someone Explain? What are our rights? Just really needed to vent i guess...

I came to work with the flu and was running 103 fever which alot of people were which pretty much gets everyone else sick. But the attendance policy is a bunch of fucking bull shit. 1 grace day PER quarter and it takes 1 quarter to get a fucking sick day/personal day and you STILL get written up for using the sick time that is supposed to cover you. Also when a Drs note should cover you because why the FUCK would you go to the dr and pay 15.00 and use your insurance just to get a fucking drs note? I mean come on! and now it's going to take twice as long to get an occurrance off. This means more people to get fired which will ALSO make our service level go up and not have enough people on the phones. Which would you rather have a center full of SICK CA's getting everyone else sick for all we know someone may have miningitis(sp?) give it to everyone and which is deadly and we have to use everyone's keyboard instead of having us buy sanitary supplies THEY need to supply it it is very unclean in there so everyone is going to get sick which means people will call in but the attendance is bull shit in my opinion like I've always said we were better off MCI....and I thought they were treating us like crap....they were nothing!

Not all unions are good. .... but i digress, I definitely agree with the new policies, It's really going to be tough with the sick/personal time accruences, bleh.. I had to take a day off earlier this month and of course I get flack for it.. I won't go into details for fear of exposing myself, but yeah...

(Date Posted:01/23/2008 11:18 AM) I remember the last time there was talk of a union and they flew out some douchebag (and put him up in a hotel) to come out and talk to us while it was "red lighting" about how a union would not benefit us. The thing was: it worked. After this, there was no longer talk of a union and the people responsible for trying to organize one were let go. It seemed that the previous attempts to organize were done by individuals who were not in "good" standing with the company and wanted to start a union because they were at risk of getting fired anyway which was a very poor representation to start one. I don't think that a union could ever happen because many people get very easily demoralized when they hear the words "Union Dues" that they fail to listen to any benefit that would be possible with a union. It's funny that the same people who are the first to bitch and moan when a benefit is taken away are the first to duck and run when there is talk of a possibility of a union.

(Date Posted:01/24/2008 1:50 PM) I'm currently corresponding with the communication workers union to see what it would take to get it started in riverbank. If you're with stellar nordia in another location, I'd like to hear from you too. To anybody here who is interested in a union, you can email me at oprunion@gmail.com. Hopefully within the month I'll have some literature to pass around at riverbank and for this thing to really work, I think we'll need to have some contacts in the other centers. So, yeah. I'm all for a union, and I would really appreciate hearing from anyone who feels the same way.

If they hear you conspiring, they will find out and nit pick some stupid ... little thing to get you axed. I can put you in contact with someone that may be able to help you. He got pretty far with getting a large group of us "riled up"... Go to myspace and search Relay Union. He should be able to help you... good luck ... Oh, I got fired because I was sick on a special needs day. I wanted to make up the hours, so I took someone's off the board. They denied me being able to take the time off, and I asked them, "Why?" They said, because I'm being paid for the day that I missed (the SND) ... I told them, I can't get paid for that, I don't have any sick time. Back and fourth trying to take the hours to make up for the day I lost... my supervisor comes back, and goes "Man, I'm sorry, but we're going to have to give you double occurance now... They fixed whatever glitch that was in the computer, and it's coming up unexcused..." I was let go that day. Ridiculous. Oh well though, I collected unemployment for 6 months at only $200 less per month than I was making there... so.. Good riddens!

(Date Posted:02/12/2008 1:13 AM) Well,i guess it doesnt matter anymore about the union thing being that we re all getting the boot anyway at least most of us are at the relay center and a lot of jobs require that u plan ur sick days, which is dumb how do i plan on being sick, hell i dont want to be sick! I was sick today there but thankfully finally got cut but whatever the s*it is dumb.
