Hey there, Private Threaders...

I just wanted to get your input about a few things about how you might like to see things continued.

Operatorhere left me a message today saying that the account we host on here at Aimoo was about to run out. Fortunately, it's not at this moment, due to a re-arranging in Aimoo price schedules. Apparently they cut their yearly rate almost in half (down from $60 to $36) so we were credited part of our money back in the form of extra page views. As it stands now, we're not officially supposed to expire until May of '07.

Now $36 isn't much, but then again, we're not the richest people on the planet. Our donation box is currently empty. But if six of us threw in six bucks, we'd have another year paid for.

Still, I'd like to ask each of you to think about the future.

It was suggested to me that it might make things more searchable if we switched to a blogging format, rather than a message forum. I feel that would lack a bit of interactivity. On the other hand, comments can be made on blogs. But it would take someone who was willing to write constantly to make the thing work, and quite frankly, I couldn't commit to it. Now if somebody were to establish a blog and link to this site, I do think that would vastly increase visibility, but that would be up to each of you individually.

Optimally, I'd like to search out a forum with lower costs and higher visibility to host this on. So I'd like to ask you guys to put your feelers out and see what's available. And while you're looking, remember that we have security concerns as well.

The other option, God forbid, is to pull the plug altogether. I don't really want to do that at all.

I and the rest of the mods here are striving to make this experience happen as smoothly and painlessly as we know how. You don't see me post quite as much because quite honestly right now I'm already running two major websites and posting content on another, along with helping build webpages for a couple of recording artists, so I sometimes fly in and fly right back out without posting. But rest assured, I'm not going to pull a Scambuster on you and just disappear.

Let me know what your ideas are for the future.

"Now if somebody were to establish a blog and link to this site, I do think that would vastly increase visibility, but that would be up to each of you individually. "

Hi CC.  I was thinking about your suggestions- and the only one I didn't like is the whole- changing the format to a blogging thing.  I couldn't invest that much time into it- and I am not sure anyone else could/would either.  I like the message board format, and since google is totally uncooperative with both of us (in spite of BOTH of our best efforts to get us added to their search base)... I have taken to emailing bloggers who have established blogs and asked them to link us.  I have been successful in a few places... especially scam and scambaiting message boards.  We are not easy to find- but if people are looking- it's possible.  I just wish more operators could find us- they wouldn't necessarily be searching for "Nigerian Scams"... they'd be searching for "Relay Operator's websites"....    Know what I mean?  If we could find a different host- I think that would be great, because clearly, it's AIMOO that is the problem... not google.

I don't know the first thing about being a webmaster though, but I do like the format at this message board:    http://www.websleuths.com/forums/  That's just an example- a site I visit often, as I'm a true crime buff.  But here's the info at the bottom of the page....

Maybe we could create a forum with VBulletin?  I don't know how expensive it is- or how hard it would be.. but Aimoo may not be the best place for our message board.  If we were easily searchable, Aimoo would be great- but we're not.  These are just my ideas.  I look forward to hearing from some others, because I have had to take a lesser role as well.  I am now working 40 + hours a week at a new job, and between that and my family, I won't be here nearly as often as usual.

I have faith, though, that everyone here will keep this place going smooth- we have a great mod/admin  group- and sometimes when one person steps back, another will step up..... I hope I will find it easier to manage my time better after I get used to working again, and will be able to come here more often... but right now, I'm so busy- it's crazy!

How much webspace and traffic do you need and how much do you want to invest? I'm not familiar with aimoo, would it be possible to bring the content over to the then new forum, on whatsoever it is being based on (phpbb or vbulletin)?

Quoting Smooth:

"Vbulliten is fucking EXPENSIVE but if you're a mod or admin you can do a lot with users that's very "big brother like".. it's an OK board set up...I've seen better for less.  Setting up the layout can be a tad tricky.  And again it can be expensive.

I've used Ezboard before, and Invision free....Ezboards can be set up to varying levels of "user allowing"...meaning you can have the board open to ANYONE to view or post regardless of if they're registered or not, you can have it set up that only registered Ezboard members can view/post, or member by approval which means you have control over who can even see the board or not.      They're totally customizeable, I've been on them for 5 years on other boards so I'm very familiar with them.  But they can get somewhat expensive depending on how you have it set up and the whole ezsupporter stuff...but go to http://www.ezboard.com  to get more information about it.    I highly recomend it.

A friend of mine runs an Invisionfree board, and there are minimal text ads that don't interfer with anything.  I don't know the web addy for it though."

You'll have to ask Clear Conscience about these,  but we don't have to pay alot here, I think it was like.. 60 a year.  The key to the whole thing is keeping people's IP Addresses HIDDEN.  So, if either of your suggestions have that option, it sounds good to me.  And as far as what Robert said, about transferring all the posts from here to a new bulletin, I think, if we had to- we could just copy and paste... it would be a pain, but worth it.  The other thing, though, is that we'd have to take this board down completely if we did decide to make a switch, because after our membership status elapses, the IP Addresses are exposed.

I'll ask FW Admin over at fraudwatchers for a rough guesstimation of the costs and the technical aspects.

I have good and bad news.

Hi...

The bad news is that Aimoo is a proprietory message board system, and as such, I cannot find any method by which the database (if it can even be downloaded by mssheila) can be "migrated" into any other forum software, let alone something like phpbb or vbulletin.

If she can find out if it uses MySQL, and if so, if she can get me a full export of the database used, then I can see if it can be migrated easily. That would be the most important thing to consider at this time.

If (and only if) it can be taken across (or alternatively if she wants to restart the whole thing from scratch) I can certainly look at a very secure phpbb installation for the group - and I have plenty of room on my reseller accounts to host their site for free.

I had a look onto the aimoo support forum and unsurprisingly...

Topic: SQL Export ability?

I just wanted to find out if we have the ability to export our forum database so it can be re-applied here or imported into any other message board software?

answer)

No, I'm afraid there is no such facility. For obvious reasons, Aimoo will not be providing a facility to enable users to move to competitors.

In case you want to migrate to a new forum, you'll lose this one or you have to copy and paste all posts from here to there (which shouldn't be too difficult given the small size of this forum).

I don't know what a reseller accounts includes, but in the worst case, you'll just have to pay for the domain and the WHOIS privacy costs, which (I guess) is less than the costs that you already have.

I think you should get in touch with FW Admin directly to discuss further details (operatorhere is a member on fraudwatchers).
