When calling in a food order, for instance pizza, go ahead and give all the pertinent information and what you want to order to the operator BEFORE THE CALL. Make sure you give all your info. Then tell the operator not to announce relay and give them instructions on what you want to order. If you do this, you will not get hung up on when you call pizza places and your order will be placed quickly.
While making a call through IP Relay or Instant Messenger, you must concentrate on the call and only on the call. You should not surf the web, chat with other people on IM, check or write email, walk away from your computer or do anything at all except the relay call. When you do this, it causes tremendous lag times and it causes great inconvenience for the person you have called, the operator who is facilitating your call, and the next deaf person who is waiting for an operator to get freed up so they can make their call. Plus it's just rude.
I can't and won't repeat.
If you don't already know how to type, please learn to do so, and practice until you get fast. This will make your phone calls a lot easier.
If you use VCO and your speech is very hard for people to understand, maybe it's time to go text all the way.
If you use VCO, please do not key in anything on your TTY as it will send very loud and very painful bursts of baudot tones into your operator's ears. Again, if your voice is hard to understand, just use regular relay.
If you get an answering machine, either leave a message or hang up, but don't redial.
