I'd like to see a new list of your biggest bitches about deaf users and how they misuse relay. What are your pet peeves? We'll call this the "Operators guide to relay 101"1. If you call a number, and the person picks up the phone, but just hangs it back up, that's a good cue for you to know that they don't want to talk to you.2. If a person tells you that they need to get off the phone, LET THEM GO.3.In the United states, there are different time zones. If you live in New York, and want to call a relative in California at 8 AM your time, try to remember that it is only 5 AM where you are calling. Waking people up before dawn to say "good morning" is very rude.Continue from here. I love this thread already!

We'll call this the "Operators guide to relay 101"

1. If you call a number, and the person picks up the phone, but just hangs it back up, that's a good cue for you to know that they don't want to talk to you.

2. If a person tells you that they need to get off the phone, LET THEM GO.

3. In the United states, there are different time zones.  If you live in New York, and want to call a relative in California at 8 AM your time, try to remember that it is only 5 AM where you are calling.  Waking people up before dawn to say "good morning" is very rude.

Continue from here.  I love this thread already!

I'm so glad to see this thread back!

4. When giving the opr a number to dial, or any phone number for that matter, put spaces in the number. It's a simple thing that will make your call go much smoother.

5. It's DIAL, not dail!

6. Read what the opr has typed to you, especially when it's a recording. If I've just typed the recording out to you, don't you dare tell me to get a live person unless that was specifically one of the options.

7. If the line rings 10 times, the person you are calling is either not home, busy, or has Caller ID and doesn't want to talk to you. Letting the phone ring 30 times will do you no good, and will in fact only piss the opr off.

8. Don't give the GA and then continue typing. For VCO users, don't give the GA and then continue speaking. I will cut you off.

9. Do not call every number that appears on your Caller ID to find out who called you. If they didn't leave a message, it was either a) unimportant, or b) the wrong number (assuming that you bothered to turn your TTY answering machine on, and if you didn't that's your problem).

10. When you place a call and the person answering the phone informs you that you have reached a wrong number and they hang up, do not tell the opr to redial. You know what? It's still gonna be a wrong number the second time! Jackass!

when the line is busy don't tell me to keep redialing til a person answers. Obviously they are on the phone.

Don't yell at me if you dialed the wrong nbr. I can't help that u put the wrong nbr in.

Please if you call someone else who is hard of hearing or deaf and they have a way to talk to u on the computer or a tty CALL THEM ON THAT! I don t want to have to scream everytime i talk.

When calling in a food order, for instance pizza, go ahead and give all the pertinent information and what you want to order to the operator BEFORE THE CALL. Make sure you give all your info. Then tell the operator not to announce relay and give them instructions on what you want to order. If you do this, you will not get hung up on when you call pizza places and your order will be placed quickly.

While making a call through IP Relay or Instant Messenger, you must concentrate on the call and only on the call. You should not surf the web, chat with other people on IM, check or write email, walk away from your computer or do anything at all except the relay call. When you do this, it causes tremendous lag times and it causes great inconvenience for the person you have called, the operator who is facilitating your call, and the next deaf person who is waiting for an operator to get freed up so they can make their call. Plus it's just rude.

I can't and won't repeat.

If you don't already know how to type, please learn to do so, and practice until you get fast. This will make your phone calls a lot easier.

If you use VCO and your speech is very hard for people to understand, maybe it's time to go text all the way.

If you use VCO, please do not key in anything on your TTY as it will send very loud and very painful bursts of baudot tones into your operator's ears. Again, if your voice is hard to understand, just use regular relay.

If you get an answering machine, either leave a message or hang up, but don't redial.

It may have been awhile since I've actually processed a call, but the stigma is just now starting to wear off....

IF THE 1-800 NUMBER YOU ARE CALLING HAS A WEBSITE, IT IS VERY LIKELY YOU CAN ACCOMPLISH WHATEVER IT IS YOU NEED TO THROUGH THE WEBSITE INSTEAD OF WASTING OUR TIME GETTING YOURSELF LOST IN A TREE MENU.
