Am I the only one who's noticed the inrease in calls to banks with scammers getting information for people's bank/online accounts?

At first I thought it was just a coincidence that I had a lot of deaf people would couldn't remember their passwords, but now it's definitely a pattern. And I'm sorry to see that it WORKS most of the time.

Goes something like this:
Scammer says they don't have their online id, can't remmeber password, etc. Rep at the bank asks for ssn, acct nbr, address, etc etc to confirm identity. Well, the scammer and his stolen info knows just enough for the dumb ass rep to decide they've confirmed enough and give them the online info. I had one rep say she could only send a new password to the person's email, and then the person requesed to CHANGE their email address on the acct, and she freaking did it!
I can't beleive how little most of these banks ask for to confirm identity before handing out account numbers and online passwords. Some of them just ask for the ssn and that's it. Hello? Easily obtainable for scammers. Makes me wonder how many people's bank accounts are being wiped out .
They're clever too. They call once and say they don't remember their last withdrawl or deposit, the rep will say something like "ok..well it was at walmart...do you remember the amount? Ok, you have a direct deposit from BlahBlah warehouse..do u know the amount?" Then they don't know, of course, and hang up. BUT, then they call back and tell the rep "I have deposit from BlahBLah warehouse i not remember how much" so the rep thinks "oh! they're obviously the real person because they know that much. Ok! I'll give them all their info!"

UGHHHHHH!

Sick of it. Sick of it. Sick of it!

I just sent you a PM.  Which banks seem to have the most lax security?  I've heard horrible things about Bank Of America's representatives.  When I was still an opr I used to take the acct numbers and names, and anything I could gather and call the bank after work and alert them of the fraud.  I can't tell you how many times I did that... I hope I helped at least some people in stopping their Identity from being stolen.

bank of america is by far the worst! those are the only calls i've had where the reps actually go through with changing info and/or giving out info, etc. credit unions are by far the BEST and lots of banks are catching onto this relay scam stuff (thankfully!) usually with the credit unions or smaller banks, they know the cust well enough to recognize them in person so they know it's not a legitimate relay call because the person's not deaf. i'm glad that banks are catching on, but the calls are driving me crazy. i used to get about 2-3 bank calls a week and now it's like 3-5 bank calls a day (sometimes more).

YES YES YES YES YES!! I get these ALL THE FREAKING TIME AND I HATE THEM!

Bank of America is the worst by far.

I had one yesterday that the scammer called and went through the whole proccess and the rep was like.. "Ummm this account has been closed." and the scammer is like "well tell me what other accounts I have open under my name and give me the information" To which the rep said "Ummmm all your accounts have been closed by you, every one of them, per your authorization."

I was just like..YESSSSSS!!! FOILED!

Does anyone else call these banks and talk to their fraud departments?  That's what I used to do, but I don't have the access to the information anymore.

Bank of America  is horrid horrid horrid!  I don't think they know what security means, quite frankly.  All you have to do is say your the person's mother and if you get the right dummy  they'll tell you what you want (bitter experience is a great teacher.)

I like places like Wachovia. Sometimes they wont tell you anything unless you pronounce it right too.  And sometimes that was  a good trick.

Does this affect US banks only? We have someone that has a contact within a major UK bank.
