Jessica M. Babcock, a GHS senior, was charged with disorderly conduct, a Class 3 felony. She is being held in the Knox County jail awaiting a court appearance. About 1,400 students were evacuated from the school at 9:38 a.m. Once members of the Galesburg Police Department and GHS staff swept Wicall Gymnasium, which is separate from the main building, students were gathered there to wait while the rest of the school was checked. Police Officer Joe Luna, school liaison for the Galesburg police, said the school received a computer-generated call at 9:30 a.m. from someone threatening to blow up the school. Luna said there was no indication that there was a bomb on the campus from the call. Luna said the call was traced to a Web site called IP-RELAY.com, which has callers recite messages that have been sent over the Internet. "It's set up for the hearing impaired," said GHS Principal Tom Chiles Friday afternoon. "You enter the phone number and what you want said, and that gets forwarded to a call center. Then someone calls and give you the information they've read off the screen." IP-RELAY.com's Web site says it does not require users to register and calls can be made anonymously. Luna said the call was traced to an IP address in room 219 of the high school where Babcock was sitting at the time the call was made. Police had also received a Crime Stopper tip from another high school student who said Babcock was responsible for the bomb threat. Babcock was interviewed at the high school and confessed, Luna said. "She had heard about other kids going to the site," Luna said. "She went to the site, got the school's phone number. She said she didn't think the call would go through, and said she just thought she'd send something stupid." During the evacuation, police, Galesburg Fire Department and members of the high school's maintenance staff searched the building and found no evidence of explosive devices. Classes resumed after the search. "Our kids handled it really well," Chiles said. "I was impressed during the evacuation and after it was over. They really followed directions well." Chiles said he was glad he could assure students there was no bomb on high school grounds before the school day was over. "We're fortunate that we were able to trace down who was responsible," Chiles said. "It was nice to be able to tell the kids at the end of the day there was no validity in the threats." Luna said Babcock is suspended from school pending expulsion hearings.
