So how would I go about becoming a deaf relay operator? I live in Maine and there doesn't seem to be any trace of this type of employment up here. Am I crazy for wanting to become a relay operator?

Thanks,

Fred

Yes you are crazy...I don't think anyone who works in this field is "quite right" to start with and I think you just loose more and more sanity as time goes on.

But...if you want to actually help DEAF PEOPLE look at what company does your State Relay and see where they have a call center...in all odds it's probably in the state capital or it could be outsourced.

I think though that a LOT of the New England region is grouped together as far as service though and it is possible there aren't any call centers or opportunities near you.

I am not sure if AT&T still has the relay contract for Maine, or if they lost it like they have most of their others.  When I left relay in 2003, I believe we still had the contract.  AT&T never had a physical center in the state of Maine to my knowledge, but handled calls through their other centers.  I worked in the Providence, RI center.

I'm not sure how long you've been on the boards, but you would have to be crazy to want to work in relay now.  It was bad enough back then, before the Nigerian fraud calls and all the other scams of IP Relay.  If given the choice now, I would probably rather work at Burger King.

WOW! I guess I didn't realize it was that bad! What a bummer.

It is pretty bad, even without the Nigerian scams and prank calls. I really liked my job the first couple of years, but now I am fed up and looking for something else because I've decided I deserve better.

Well, Amy,
As a relay operator you can't really "help deaf customers feel more comfortable" with the system. You just do your job. One of the things they teach you as a relay operator is that you merely relay the conversation back and forth. You don't help the deaf or hearing person to understand the phone call or encourage them to have a better experience in any way. You can be polite to each party of the conversation, as opposed to being a jerk, but that's it.

For the person living in Maine who wants to become a relay operator, I used to work for one of the state relay providers. The provider has multiple contracts with multiple states. So, chances are if you want to relay calls for the state of Maine you'd have to go work in a completely different state.
