Hi All. I have to say first of all it's really too bad this site has become so cumbersome awkward and yes, ugly. Message boards should be intuitive and this one certainly does not fit the bill. A mini vent.

My question is what effect to CA's feel technology will have on your job? Are any of you working with Captel or similiar systems? Of course Captel isn't much use for Deaf or deaf afraid to use their voice and maybe there  isn't   a high incidence of deaf abusers who can use this system, but I wonder if it would make any inpact at all?

I guess Captel or other system could still become corrupt and VOIP certainly would make things worse. I still think we relay users need to have some way of protecting our service--ah back to registration. Maybe this topic ain't so new after all!

I've gotten bitter to the point now that I wish there were some way to make the government realize that half the IP calls they're paying for are fraud or pranksters so they'd be less willing to fund this...or do they know, and not even care? Seriously, there should either be registration or maybe just the IP version of relay should be done away with all together (go back to needing a TTY in order to make a call).

I certainly agree that registration or something of the sort should occur. IP  relay is a lot easier to use then the TTY, really. The screen is so much larger and the color scheme variable. Staring at blue letters on a black background (or sometimes too brightly backlit), two lines at a time is not so easy. My VCO phone keypad is level and has smaller keys then a laptop making seeing what one is typing difficult and hard to do it makes typos a major headache. I'm not illiterate but you wouldn't know it from all the errors I make. It's also easier to "copy and paste" a long winded message which can only be done on the computer. Using my  "regular"   TTY is fine as long as  no one is home.    If my husband is home or we have company the tones are too raucous for just about everyone. Even my cats get up and walk out! I'm lucky to have two machines many deaf can't afford it. Video phone is also popular but since my sign is so lousy it wouldn't do me that much good. One of these days we may spring for a Captel phone. I'm told my speech is pretty good - guess I'd find out fast if people are just being nice!

There really has to be a financial disincentive for the phone companies before they will do something to let the RO or other systems get rid of scammers- I understand now after reading many posts what's behind some of this . It has to be so hard on the CA's - no wonder they want to do something else. There will always be kids and others who abuse the phones. I'm sure in "the olden days" when operators handled all calls they put up with a lot of this stuff. Someone should write a book on the adventures of operators--hmmm
